Block Installation

Our installation process for block openings — frame removed, new window set in the block.

When to Use This

When the work order calls for block installation and the old frame comes out.

Tools & Materials

1. Measuring tape (3-way measure from outside)
2. Camera / phone for damage photos
3. Plastic, drop cloths, exterior tarps
4. Utility knife
5. Demo tools
6. Level
7. Caulking
8. Tape, flat trim (interior finish)

Steps

1. We introduce ourselves to the homeowner.
2. Explain to homeowner our process.
3. Measure each window from the outside off the 3 way. Also look for any damage by the areas we are working at inside and out. Take pictures of damages — even on the roof if we step on it. Let the homeowner know about it.
4. Protect the floors and furniture with plastic and drop cloths. Also the outside with exterior tarps.
5. Then take your knife and run it between the old frame and the drywall so the old caulking will break away.
6. Then start removing the old sash and the glass.
7. Then cover the whole window with plastic so we keep all the dust and dirt out.
8. Then scribe the old caulking in between the block and the old window.
9. We can pull the frame.
10. Clean up the opening.
11. Install the new window.
12. Check level, plumb and square.
13. Test the operable sash — opens and closes fine. Make any adjustments if needed.
14. Clean the frame, take all the dust off inside and out.
15. Then do the finish work on the inside and out. Tape on the edge of the new window and the block and the drywall.
16. Apply the caulking all the way around the inside and outside.
17. Then smooth the caulking inside and out.
18. Clean up the areas inside and out.
19. When the crew chief is doing a walkthrough with the homeowners, the right hands are doing a last walkthrough on the outside and inside.
20. Right before leaving the job site, make sure the street is clean where the trailer was parked.

Quality Standard

Window level, plumb and square. Operable sash tested. Caulking smooth inside and out. Street clean at trailer spot before departure.

Common Mistakes

• Skipping the 3-way measure from outside before demo.
• Not covering the window with plastic during demo.
• Pulling frame before scribing caulking between block and old window.
• Leaving the street dirty where the trailer parked.
