Retro Fin Installation

Our installation process for retro fin — new window into the existing frame.

When to Use This

When the work order calls for retro fin and the existing frame stays in place.

Tools & Materials

1. Measuring tape (3-way measure from inside)
2. Camera / phone for damage photos
3. Plastic and drop cloths
4. Demo tools
5. Level
6. Caulking / back-bead sealant
7. Foam (between new window and old frame)
8. Tape, flat trim (interior finish)
9. Trim fin material (when required — see below)

Steps

1. We introduce ourselves to the homeowner.
2. Explain to homeowner our process.
3. Measure each window from the inside off the 3 way. Also look for any damage by the areas we are working at inside and out. Take pictures of damages — even on the roof if we step on it. Let the homeowner know about it.
4. Protect the floors and furniture with plastic and drop cloths. When we do ACB and drywall, cover the whole window.
5. Stage all the windows where they go.
6. Then start removing old windows.
7. Dry fit window.
8. Clean up the opening.
9. Put a back bead of caulking on the edge of the old frame.
10. Install the new windows.
11. Check level, plumb and square.
12. Test the operable sash — opens and closes fine. Make any adjustments if needed.
13. Clean the frame, take all the dust off inside and out, and put foam on the inside between the new window and the old frame.
14. Then do the finish work on the inside and out. Tape on the edge of the retro fin and the stucco and flat trim on the inside.
15. Apply the caulking all the way around the inside and outside.
16. Then smooth the caulking inside and out.
17. Clean up the areas inside and out.
18. When the crew chief is doing a walkthrough with the homeowners, the right hands are doing a last walkthrough on the outside and inside.

When to Trim Fins

Trim fins are required on retrofit when the exterior is not flush stucco or the existing frame is a pop-out frame.

• Not flush stucco — trim fins are required.
• Pop-out frame — trim fins are required.
• Flush stucco, standard frame — trim fins are typically not required. Confirm on site if unsure.

Discretion

Some retrofit conditions call for crew judgment on site. When in doubt, check this section first, then call Tom (Production Manager).

Quality Standard

Unit level, plumb and square. Operable sash tested. Caulking smooth inside and out. Walkthrough complete inside and outside before closeout.

Common Mistakes

• Skipping the 3-way measure from inside before demo.
• Not photographing or reporting existing damage.
• Demo before staging windows where they go.
• Missing foam between new window and old frame.
